Registering BT Tablet SBC’s
This document is a how-to guide showing the steps for registering Tablet mac’s/SBC’s on Unity and Hexnode, issues that may arise and the steps to resolve too. When a Tablet Mac registration request comes in from BT-Staging for a Tablet SBC follow the steps below.
See Stage 1A - 2A if registering to a Unit in the field.
Stage 1 - Unity
Remove the colons and search for the Mac in Unity in the search field. If the Mac profile or a Unit containing the mac appears. Open it and skip to step 9
If the search returns nothing? It could be set as a retired Mac in a Unity Profile or it has never been registered.
Go to the DB and and open the unit_pcs table and search for the Mac using the Filter Rows field. Again, without the colons. Ask a Tech Level 2 member to do this if needed.
The Mac should appear. And you can use the unit_id to locate it on Unity. Navigate to any Unit on Unity and overwrite the unit_id at the righter most end of the address with the five character unit_id, hit enter and the Unit profile containing the Mac/SBC will open. If the Mac doesn’t appear? It has to be registered a-fresh on Unity.
Go back to Unity and navigate to the Spares directory in the BT Staging section. Click “Units” on the vertical menu on the left hand side.
You will see the drop-down in the “Location” section. Click this and Select “ “BT Staging”
Then Click “Spares” and the Spares section opens.
Click “New Unit” and the pop up opens. Populate the fields “Name” and “Mac Address” with the Mac address, again without the colons. Click “Create” and the Mac/SBC should appear in the Unit profile if the Mac/SBC is online. If it doesn’t appear it will appear when it comes online. Keep the Mac Profile tab open. It’s best to have a couple of Unity Tabs open when doing this.
At this point you can move the Mac/SBC into the BB unit of choice. Best to use a BB that hasn’t got an active Mac/SBC in it. If that’s not possible, retire the active Mac/SBC in the BB unity profile.
In the “open search field” at the top, enter BB- and the entire list of BB units will show. Select an inactive BB(one that has the red icon) and the BB profile will open.
Go back to the tab with the Mac profile that has the Mac/SBC in it that you need to Move to the BB. Select the Mac/SBC and Highlight it.
Click Move and the pop up opens.
In the Select Location dropdown select “Test Units”
And Using the Unit dropdown select the BB you’ve chosen in step 10.
Click Move.
Refresh the BB Unity profile and the Mac/SBC will be gone.
Navigate back to the tab with the BB unit you’ve moved the Mac/SBC to. Refresh and you will see it as the active Mac/SBC.
The Tablet Mac/SBC is now set to the BB unit on Unity.
Stage 2 - Hexnode
If you are not already logged into Hexnode? Login.
Click on “hexnode mdm” at the top left corner of the page.
You will see the Activity Feed section on the right hand side. The Tablet will be on this list, near the top with a label “ Magna Android Device”
Start from the top of the list down and check each Magna Android Device till you find it. If you don’t find it. Ask BT-Staging to power-cycle the Tablet SBC.
Click on the Magna Android Device link.
When in the Magna Android Device profile page you will see a horizontal menu “Device Summary, Device Info, Security etc” Click on Device Info.
Scroll down and check the Ethernet Mac to see if it corresponds with the Mac you need to set on Hexnode.
If the Mac is not the one you want. Go back to the Activity Feed, go to the next Magna Android Device on the list and check the Ethernet Mac. Use steps 2 to 7 to do this.
When you locate the mac you want, scroll back to the top of the profile page.
You will see the Android icon graphic with the Magna Android Device label to its right. It’s at the top left under hexnode mdm.
Overwrite the Magna Android Device label with the BB unit label you’ve chosen in Stage 1 and click enter or click the “correction mark” symbol icon.
While in the same profile page, on the horizontal menu “Device Summary, Device info etc” Click Action history and you will see the applications, configuration and policies have installed.
Tablet Mac/SBC is now set on Hexnode, you can follow up with BT.
Stage 3 - Move to Spares on Unity.
Navigate to the BB unit you’ve registered the Mac/SBC to.
Select the Mac/SBC and Click Move Mac/SBC.
In the Select Location dropdown select Spares.
In the Unit dropdown select the specific Mac from the list and click Move.
Refresh the page and the Mac/SBC will be gone.

Overwrite the label beside the Android icon with the UK-012345-T reference ID.
Click on the “Actions” drop-down.
Select Change Owner and a pop up appears.
You will see the “Select User” field, Click this.
Search for the Area Location of the Unit(get this on Unity) from the list and Click Assign.
Get the BT-Streethub onsite engineer to test the dialer and make a call.
Congratulations you’ve registered a Tablet fitted to a Unit out in the field.
Stage 6 - Tablet is offline on Hexnode or shows Maintenance Mode
on-screen.
If the Tablet is offline or shows Maintenance mode on-screen. Get the onsite engineer to power-cycle the unit, followed by a power-cycle of the Tablet and it should ping Hexnode. Always monitor “Last checked-in”
If the above power-cycle doesn’t bring it online. Get the engineer to disconnect the power and network to it. Power-cycle the unit and reconnect.
If the above power-cycle doesn’t bring it online, send a pingTest using the Continuous Ping Network Connection Test knowledge article :
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iVDPi97LN_F4OQXHnSRkQmnOZkFbuGDKsQ61DjuBYdk/edit
Advise the BT-Streethub engineer if the pingTest is timing out and follow up with BT Streethub.
