Basics of 1-2-1's
Regularly scheduled
Never missed by the Manager!!
The primary focus is the Team Member
Keep notes and follow up on any actions (see Preparation below)
Frequency With Each Team Member
Ideally weekly with each team member
Bi-weekly is acceptable
Monthly is the absolute very minimum frequency
General Rules
Never conduct a 1-2-1 in a public place (eg an open plan office). However, it doesn't have to be strictly in private, a coffee shop, meeting room, open space outside in a park, etc. is acceptable
If the 1-2-1 is conducted in the office, make sure you go to a private area and close the door
If there is no choice but to complete the 1-2-1 at your desk in an open office, use sensitivity
Time
The 1-2-1 should last around 30 minutes with this format:
10 minutes for THEM
10 minutes for YOU
10 minutes for GROWTH, for example their career and development
Preparation
What do my notes say I need to check on?
Am I committed to following up?
What notes should I make now?
How might I ask that question?
Am I really committed to following up?
What do I need to be sure to communicate?
What behaviour of his/hers am I focusing on?
What projects or work am I involved in?
What organisational issues / news / efforts can I share?
What meetings have I just attended - what did I learn?
What are the common items I need to get out to everyone - about schedules or projects or workload or our team?
What positive feedback can I give?
What corrective feedback am I going to give?
Is there something I can delegate?
What project, task or work would be helpful to their development?
What are some Effective Questions I can Ask?
